Just by general observation of the two you wouldn't
think that there would be an association between smoking and weight
loss. In fact, it's a very common observation that people gain weight
after giving up smoking.
There are a couple of reasons why this is. For
one, your body burns about 10% more calories per day when you smoke.
So when you give up smoking, you burn 10% less calories per day. The
other reason why it makes you burn more calories is that smoking puts
your body under stress and stress can cause you to lose weight...but
it can also cause death.
So is it worth it? I would think not. The lesser
of two evils just doesn't pan out in this scenario. After all, you wouldn't
give up a body part in order to lose 10% more calories a day now would
you?
Knowing that quitting smoking causes you to
burn 10% less calories is a good start. The other thing to know is that
when you quit smoking food is going to start tasting good again. Be
prepared for this. You can enjoy those tastes and still stick to your
weight loss goals. Just eat 10% less than you normally would. The easiest
way to do this is to keep eating what you are already eating, as long
as it is fairly healthy food. Just limit your portions. Try to eat 5-7
very small but very tasty meals per day, and get plenty of exercise.
Remember that you need to check with your doctor before you start any
type of exercise plan or weight loss regimen.
