Learning to read food labels is an integral
part of any weight loss plan. The facts can be deceiving and you must
be able to extract the pertanent information from the data given. Portion
size is very important because it specifies the amount of food along
with the calories and fat it contains. Each serving size on the label
describes how much by weight or volume a serving contains. Some foods
have very small servings.
One of the most important things to look for
on food labels is serving size. Always look for the serving size and
servings per container to know the real calorie intake. A large bag
of chips has about 10 servings. Lets say each serving size is 160 calories
and 7 grams of fat, then 1/10 of that bag is your serving size. The
bag contains a total of 1600 calories and 70 grams of fat. If you eat
the whole bag of chips based on a 2000 calorie diet, you've almost ate
a whole day's worth of calories.
Another thing, which probably seems obvious
is that you need to pay attention to fat and cholesterol content. Fat
in your diet is essential but should be eaten sparingly for any amount
of weightloss. Fats are plentiful in cream sauces, hamburger sauces,
salad dressing and desserts because of the high amount of butter and
oil. Saturated fat is the really bad stuff. That's type of fat that
clogs arteries, so pay close attention to saturated fats.
