Life can sometimes seem to be all about rewards. You go to work...you
are rewarded with a paycheck. You kiss your spouses butt and you are
rewarded with your sanity.... You remember to take your dog for a walk
and you are rewarded with... well you are rewarded by not receiving
a surprise when walking barefoot on your carpet.
The best way to acheive health and fitness is to set yourself up on
a reward system. This tips the scale in your favor simply because motivating
yourself to exercise every day, or every other day (or a couple of times
a month if you are like me) is half the battle. You know that once you
get started you will lose all that apprehension that you were loathe
to shed in the first place. You just need to get started and the best
way to do that is to set yourself up with a nice reward.
"The big problem for most people is getting started," says Jeff Swiefel,
M.A., an exercise physiologist and director of product development for
NordicTrack in Chaska, Minnesota. "People know they will feel better
if they exercise, but they're not sure how to fit it into their daily
lives."
Here are some other fitness tips for you to think about....
Get off the couch and get physically active. Your activity doesn't
have to be organized or continuous -- 10 minutes of walking and 20 minutes
of housework add up. (Gee, I know this one is kind of a no-brainer but
sometimes people do actually just need to hear that).
"Your routine should be enjoyable and comfortable," Zwiefel says. "Increasing
its intensity and duration gradually will prevent injuries."
