Are we genetically predisposed to being obese?
Obesity tends to run in families, suggesting a genetic link. Yet families
also share diet and lifestyle habits that may also contribute to obesity.
It is not easy to say whether the causes of obesity are nature or nurture.
Americans tend to eat high-fat foods, and put
taste and convenience ahead of nutrition. Also, most Americans do not
get enough exercise. Therefore, Americans have a high rate of obesity.
On the other hand, have you ever seen a fat mother with a fat baby?
It kind of makes you think that the causes of obesity are obviously
mostly genetic.
Most overweight people have no more psychological
problems than people of average weight. Still, up to 10 percent of people
who are mildly obese and try to lose weight on their own or through
commercial weight loss programs have binge eating disorder. This makes
me wonder if binge eating disorder is caused by dieting rather than
obesity.
There are some medical causes of obesity as
well. These include hypothyroidism, Cushing's syndrome, depression,
and certain neurological problems that can lead to overeating. A doctor
can tell whether there are underlying medical conditions that are causing
weight gain or making weight loss difficult. Always consult a doctor
before you start any type of weight loss program.
